Handler: Raenell Silcox

Hi! My name is Hemmy. Not much is known about my life before the people from the Gonzalez Animal Shelter found me wandering the streets of Gonzalez in late 2009. The vet thought that I was about two years old at the time and also thought that I am a blue heeler/border collie mix. One thing the humans figured out about my early life is that at some point I was shot by some mean person because I have lead shot embedded throughout the right side of my body from my neck to the middle of my ribs which causes me to walk with a permanent limp. But I’m alright, really!
As I said, the Gonzalez Animal Shelter saved me from the streets but they didn’t keep me for very long before the good people from Austin Dog Rescue came and took me to Austin with them where I lived for a few weeks with a wonderful foster family. Then one day my Mom, Raenell, came to visit me there and I could tell right away that she needed me. So I walked up to her and put my head in her lap to let her know that I was willing to go home with her and take care of her. She accepted my offer of help and a few days later I went to live with her and her five cats (I don’t mind the cats very much, really) in a cozy little house in southwest Austin. About a week later she brought me a very attractive female companion named Pearl (also from Austin Dog Rescue) who I love and admire a lot.
My favorite place to be in the world, other than on the couch next to my Mom, is Redbud Isle. Pearl and I have a lot of canine and human friends there and I love to run and play with my friends and chase balls and squirrels. A lot of times we go to a restaurant afterwards with some of our friends and if we are very lucky and very good, we might get a little bit of bacon.
My Mom decided that I might be a good therapy dog because I am very calm and not easily upset by much of anything and I love to meet new people and visit different places. I’m excited about my new career and I can’t wait to go on some site visits. Hope to see you soon!!
